Tandem BASE is developing quickly as a sport, business, and recreational activity. Here at BASE Jump Moab we take exploration, advocation, and adventure seriously. This winter we took a trip to Valley of the Gods to try to open up some more exit points that are friendly to Tandem BASE jumping. We took all the supplies we would need for multiple days and headed out into the great unknown to do what we have always supported doing: Climbing, Highlining, BASE jumping, and Tandem BASE.
There are many reasons not to do things, but not very many people have an easy time answer WHY the do, do things. It’s one thing to repeat something someone else spearheaded…. as it’s always far easier to be taught what to do that to actually work out the details for yourself with original thinking, insight, and true vision. They say seeing is believing, but I am beginning to think that believing is the first way that you can actually see new things and manifest greatness and newness.
We decided to go Valley of the Gods because we had visited this area years before and left with one conclusive idea; “there is a lot of potential here.” I should take a second here to identify our team and the history we have together for you to better understand the process we were trying to rekindle and bring to life. For all of these adventures, be it Tandem BASE Moab, or outside of it, high lining, climbing, rigging, or even just basic exploration— the team you create is everything. If you do not create a team surrounded by trust, the team usually fails due to complexity created by ego, selfishness, or greed. We did not have these issues.
Sylvan Christensen, my business partner, room mate, and best bud and I planned to share a canvass tent, bring highline gear, climbing gear, and have everything we needed to be self sufficient for nearly a week. Spencer Seabrooke and his partner Alenka were going to share the dojo, bring gear as well, and provide the team with a wood burning stove for cooking and warmth. David Morrison a local pro at editing and cinematography was also going to be part of the crew capturing footage and hopefully have the ability to join BASE jump Moab for some Tandem BASE jumps. We were all fully set and ready but we were thinking “hopefully Rusty would show up as well and have his dream machine ready for the greater good. “
Rusty— like always… showed up. The dream machine landed swiftly covering our entire camp with sand like a storm from Mars. We all laughed, hugged, and dramatic amounts of stoke filled the air like the dust storm that we just survived. We all finished setting up base camp and debated if the wind was too strong for a jump. We stood around racking gear and prepped ropes for a rappel escape if necessary and took a chance at opening our first new tower. It worked. Rusty hover dropped the team and Sylvan, Spencer, David, and I all got jumps off of Eagle Plume Tower. It was the first jump of the trip, on the first night of the trip, and the first Tandem BASE exit established in Valley of the Gods.
