Well before BASE Jump Moab was formed, the goal was to make BASE jumping available to as many people as possible. It usually takes an incredible amount of training and intentional dedication to start BASE jumping— but, our question was… What if there was another option? What if you could experience BASE jumping without training, expertise, or any previous experience with flight. We wanted Tandem BASE jumping with BASE Jump Moab to be that option for people of all ages, sizes, skill levels, and walks of life!

Up until the other day the oldest people we have ever taken for Tandem BASE jumps, with BASE Jump Moab, were my own parents. My Mom and Dad came out to see my house, support my business, and yes; complete a Tandem BASE Jump, each, with their son. My Mom and Dad, 73/74, both did absolutely wonderful jobs training and being ready for the jumps~ It was very thrilling for them and I think they both had the idea of backing down still in their heads! But, they made the effort to suspend their disbelief and strap in for the ride of a lifetime! It made the Tandem BASE experience for them that much better because they were so impressed to be able to complete a task they previously thought was impossible. Sharing those moments with my parents I will remember forever— from seeing my Mom filled with pure joy and uncontrollable laughing, to my Dad looking and me and saying “That’s a pretty incredible feeling, drew. I’m proud of you.” Ever since, they too have remember that day— and proudly show off their videos around the world as they travel together.

200 Tandem BASE jumps, 3 countries, and 2 years later… I got a phone call late one afternoon with a man on the other side of the line wanting to go Tandem BASE jump right then!

“Hello, this is BASE Jump Moab, Andy speaking… How can I help you?”

“Hi, I just wanted to know more about the BASE jumping and if I can go right now?”

“Right now, right now?” I responded, asking back “are you in town?'“

“I am in town, I’m ready to go, and I found you on Google Maps… I am down the street. Can we jump right now? Or is that not possible?”

I opened up a few weather apps on my phone to check the winds and calculate the best place to take him to jump— and when I confirmed the weather was good, I responded. “Come on over, let’s go try to make a Tandem BASE Jump.”

When I met Cody— I hadn’t expected him to be 79… When I parked at the parking lot, got out of my car, and saw him for the first time— he saw the look on my face and said “You weren’t expecting an old guy, huh?” I chuckled.

He assured me that he was fit, ready, and his stoke was felt from a mile away— so I can’t really say I nervous about his age at all. To me he just genuinely enjoyed life and knew he would love this experience. Some people just know, they feel the vibe, and when their energy shows up smiling and stoked— I can’t help but vibe with them. Cody’s love for life and his enjoyment of adventure made me smile all day. We safely jumped and the next day I took him out on the river to experience white water rapids in his boat for the first time. Somewhere between the hilarious laughter following the BASE jump and the whooping and hollering through the wave trains of the Colorado river…. I thought, “Wow, I hope I’m this bad ass at 79. In fact, I just hope I make it to 79” Thanks for showing me that life never has to get dull Roger, Lynn, and Cody. You’re an inspiration to us all.
