Brazil 2022 was an absolutely fantastic trip and most of the cliffs we jumped were also Tandem BASE jump able. The cliff in Itarana is actually a wingsuit-able cliff where people learn to start and fly their wing suits on an exit point that is VERY overhanging. The point of jumping over hanging cliffs is that when you BASE jump the over hang offers addition margin between the time you are deploying your parachute and the time it takes to make sure the direction your parachute is flying… is away from the cliff. Flying away from the cliff is 100% safer than flying into it!

I had traveled there to learn some skills flying my tracking suit and ended up having time to take one of the locals on a quick spin under the tandem rig. It’s always fun to share the experience of flight with people and when it is a local it is even more fun. To be able to give back to the family that we were staying with was genuinely amazing. Their meals, home, and farm were profoundly useful in the course and in my learning of tracking— so I felt as if offering the experience was a great way to show appreciation~ Since they had hosted many BASE Jumpers, and the BASE with the Bobs course was always so kind and giving; they were immediately stoked about the idea for me to take someone Tandem BASE jumping with BASE jump moab in Brazil. I didn’t have any of my climbing, canyoneering, rappelling, or rope swing equipment— so I was rather stoked on their intrigue and support for Tandem BASE.

The coolest thing about this cliff is the fact that they had a wildly powerful farm truck that fit 12 of us into the back of it. It was extraordinarily hot and humid (to my white boy standards) so I took the time to fashion a temporary shade structure in the back of the truck to keep us all more comfortable. The ride up to the top of the cliff saves about 3 hours of hiking and is incredibly stunning. There are plants, animals, amazing views of rolling Brazilian hills, and when you park at the top it’s only a 10 minute flat walk to the exit. Sarah was incredibly courageous for her first jump, and everything went as smooth as butter. To be supported by my long time friend Scotty Bob, and Ben Dixon Dicko— was also very encouraging to my spirit and my soul because it said to me that they saw and trusted and more importantly respected the work I had put into tandem base so much that they would allow me to Tandem BASE jump during the Course. To me it was the honor of legends to allow me this and it may have been one of the best moments of my 2022 year. Landing safely next to her entire family made us all smile big and everyone was happy as could be. Over all, it was yet another BASE jump Moab Tandem BASE moment to remember.

Big Thank you to BASE with the Bobs, their course, and the families of Brazil that help the entire production happen. Without all of you so many wonderful experiences, in so many different peoples lives would not be able to happen. I had such a blast being able to come out and immerse myself in Brazilian culture, see the landscape flying through Brazilian skies, and my goodness do I miss the Brazilian food. I promise 100% that I will be back to see many things I wish I could on this trip, but I just didn’t have the time to. Thanks again to everyone and hopefully see you in #pitfall2023
